Waste and bilge water

Various activities within the port generate different types of residual waste. For example, oil or waste specific to shipping, such as bilge water (oil-water mixture in the engine room). There are various facilities for the sustainable and efficient collection of ship-generated waste from inland navigation.

In Antwerp

There are three permanent waste parks in the Antwerp port area. In addition, on the Right Bank, the bilge barge can also be used.

Waste collection centres

There are several waste collection centres in the port area were barge operators are able to discard their domestic and dangerous waste.

Opening hours:

From Monday to Friday between 7:30 and 15:15.

On the left bank of the Scheldt:

K1552 – Kallopark* (oily, greasy and miscellaneous ship's waste): + 32 3 229 73 27

*The Shipping management department laid down temporary restrictions for the accessibility of the waste collection centre in Kallo: barges up to 140 m with a maximum draught of 4.25 m.

The following waste is collected

Only waste materials and quantities originating from normal operational activities of an inland vessel can be accepted upon presentation of the ECO card

Oily and greasy ship waste

solid waste containing oil and grease such as rags, absorbents, oily cleaning waste, oil-stained materials, etc. Shorten oil hoses to maximum 1 meter.

Conditions

The waste collection centre is exclusively for barge masters.
Report to the waste collection centre attendant with your ECO card. Copies or photographs are not allowed. The oil disposal booklet and the ECO card serve as identification for the right to free disposal.
Wait for permission from the waste collection centre attendant to deposit your waste in the containers.
Deposit the waste yourself in the correct waste containers. When doing so, follow the instructions of the waste collection centre attendant closely.
Submit the waste once it has been sorted. If you do not sort correctly, the waste collection centre attendant may ask you to sort the waste on board first.
You should sort and reduce your waste on board the ship and not in the waste collection centre or on the quay.
Pack hazardous waste in accordance with applicable government regulations: leak-proof and fitted with a closure cap.
You must not mix different types of waste.
The waste collection centre attendant will fill out thedeposit slip, sign it and give it to you. You also sign this certificate.
You can only drop off your waste during the opening hours of the waste collection centres (7.30am - 3.15pm on weekdays). Depositing waste outside opening hours is considered to be fly-tipping and will be fined.
The waste collection centre attendant has the right to refuse any waste that you do not present correctly.
The waste collection centres are under camera surveillance.
In the event of escalations or situations that jeopardise the safety and operation of the waste collection centre, the waste collection centre attendant may request assistance from the port authorities (Port Authority Officer or the Waterway Police).

Bilge barge

Bilge water (oil-water mixture in the engine room) - and ship's waste and domestic waste - of barges is collected in the Port of Antwerp by barge. The port dues include a contribution towards the collection. Calling the bilge barge is possible starting from 1,000 litres bilge water.

Conditions

The bilge barge is for barge operators only.
The offerer of hazardous waste makes sure the packaging of the waste products complies with the applicable government regulations.
The delivery of bilge water and oil is free with delivery of a volume of 1,000 to 6,000 litres per collection. If the barge operator wants to release more bilge water and/or oil, the processing of the additional volume will be charged. If less than 1,000 litres is delivered the collection is also charged.
The oil-delivery booklet or the ECO card serve as identification for the right to free delivery. Waste from a ship which is clearly part of the barge fleet but which does not have an oil delivery booklet or an ECO card may only be received in accordance with national regulations. Such delivery must be followed by a declaration of the collection facility to the national institute.
The barge operator meticulously follows the instructions of the agent of the collection facility.
The barge operator respects the guidelines shown at the collection facilities via guidelines/sorting panels.
