Licensed companies for the handling of dangerous goods
In Port of Antwerp-Bruges, various activities take place with dangerous goods such as gases, chemicals or fuels. These activities are strictly regulated to ensure that they are carried out in complete safety. Companies can perform certain activities, such as fumigation or bunkering, only if they have a specific accreditation or permit. The Harbour Master's Office issues these permits and certificates.

Waste collectors
Various activities within the port generate different types of residual waste. For example, oil or waste specific to shipping, such as sludge or bilge water (oil-water mixture in the engine room).
A licensed waste collector has an OVAM permit and meets the conditions of the Harbour Master's Office.
For maritime shipping, the legislation is included in the Waste management plan and for inland navigation, the Flemish Waste management plan for inland navigation applies. The following companies are licensed for waste collection.
Bunkering companies and bunker ships
Licensed bunkering companies can only use licensed bunkering vessels to deliver LNG, conventional fuels and lubricating oils to ships.

Licensed degassing companies
In Port of Antwerp-Bruges, there is a total ban on degassing of substances that cause nuisance, such as petrol. Indeed, free degassing releases volatile organic compounds that can not only cause odour nuisance, but can also be harmful to workers at the port and local residents.
Degassing is only permitted in facilities specifically provided for this purpose. Various companies offer degassing services to process residual fumes from tankers and tank barges. In this way, ships can safely degas the ship's tanks in an environmentally-friendly way between different cargoes.

Licensed gas experts
A gas expert oversees compliance with certain legal safety standards in the port when activities involving gas are carried out or, for example, declares work areas safe during ship repair operations. Recognised training courses IMDG code
All persons involved in the transportation of dangerous goods must receive training on the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code) and port regulations or port by-laws. The certificates of these mandatory training courses are valid for five years. To renew this certificate, you follow a refresher course at an approved training centre. If your certificate has expired, you must follow the basic training again.
